Apple Watch Now Tracks Skiing, Snowboarding Activity
Heads upwards, skiers and snowboarders: Apple only announced that y'all can at present use its latest smartwatch to rail your activity on the slopes.
Developers of apps like snoww, Slopes, Squaw Alpine, Snocru, and Ski Tracks have rolled out updates that leverage the built-in GPS and altimeter in the Apple Watch Series 3 and custom workout APIs released in watchOS 4.two to allow users track skiing and snowboarding metrics, Apple said. Those metrics include vertical descent, horizontal distance, number of runs, boilerplate and maximum speeds, total time spent on the slopes, and calories burned.
Plus, yous'll be able to contribute agile calorie measurements from your time on the mountain to the Apple Picket Activity app and become credit towards your Activity rings, Apple said.
The updated Slopes app lets you track your speed, vertical altitude, lift vs. trail time, and more, Apple said. The Snocru and Ski Tracks apps offer similar functionality; plus, Snocru now lets y'all track your runs entirely from your Apple Sentinel while Ski Tracks supports 17 different snow workouts—everything from downhill skiing to snowshoeing.
Snoww, meanwhile, is a social ski tracking app that lets y'all find your friends on the slopes, compare your stats with theirs, and possibly nab a spot on a mountain'southward leaderboard. Squaw Alpine is a resort-specific app that lists all the trails and chairlifts yous rode.
The updated apps are available in the App Store now; they require watchOS 4.two or later.
"Having the ability to runway the details of runs with Apple Watch is an incredible nugget for anybody from training athletes to skiers and riders just looking to have fun and stay active," Olympic Moguls Gold Medalist and Squaw Alpine Ambassador Jonny Moseley said in a statement. "The Squaw Alpine app for Apple Picket helps me when I'k out with my family to not only track exactly where my kids are on the mountain, but also compare our performance, so I tin brand certain I'm keeping up with my sons and add some fun competition to our 24-hour interval."
