Lately Lanie has been licking the sofa...she volition start licking herself and will and then go along on to licking the sofa. I have been putting towels or blankets downward, but she likes to couch and will move information technology out of the fashion. It's and so gross, and information technology's difficult to clean to get the marks totally out, so I would similar to figure out why she'southward doing it. When nosotros're home we can redirect her, only when we go abroad, she moves the sometime towels and licks to her heart's content.
I wish we hadn't immune our dogs on the article of furniture, but it'south ane of their great pleasures in life, so I'm not going to stop it now. Anyone accept suggestions for stopping the licking?

Here she is, happy with herself and the slobber-covered sofa.

Since the sofa'due south thoroughly moisture, she can finally relax

She may need to exist distracted with exercise, play/interaction... I find that when nosotros get to busy with our day the first one left out of the routine is the domestic dog hence bad repetative behaviors bloom. Just give a walk at the aforementioned time everyday a try, if already doing that try to add something like a Kong with a difficult to pull out peanut butter covered treat... to break upwardly a minatinous day. Maybe some other malady just I know this approach has corrected a few undesirable traits for our family unit pet.

I'one thousand guessing it is somekind of a comfort to her...like a cat kneading...dogs will oft directly their attention on one detail particular...usually starts on the paws...goes to rugs or in your example, the furniture. Stress and boredom too are causes for this. Like mentioned above, re-directing...maybe give her an actress yummy bone or treat when she starts. Or a toy, anything, to get her listen off of the licking.

Don't know if it is any consolation, merely my rescue english pointer does that, and I am thinking it is a comfort/habit thing.

I have a fleece coating I cover our leather couch with, and she will kickoff licking herself, and then stop off with a a few slurps on the fleece. Does the same design when licking on her dog bed, on the coating on top of our bed that she sleeps on, etc. I've been telling her to finish for ii years now, and she does....but resumes whenever her adjacent licking begins. I am home with her, and so it never gets out of mitt or actually wet.

When you leave her alone at abode, is there any way you could wrap an onetime coating around those cushions (tucked completely underneath the cushions), and then that she might think it is part of the burrow and lick on something that can be washed?

I guess they could have worse bad habits, but it is abrasive!

P.S. Your canis familiaris is adorable.

Our younger dog does that. Information technology seems kind of random and unthinking...she will be licking her foot so simply spill over to the couch...*sigh*

I think information technology'southward the colour and material of the couch because we accept the aforementioned one and our dog does it likewise! Nosotros just yell NO! and she stops immediately...merely continue doing that and hopefully...

First, I would try cleaning that area of the sofa with an enzymatic cleaner to remove any possible organic thing that might exist alluring your dog. It won't damage her, and won't leave a rest. After it dries, sponge the area with a 50-50% solution of vinegar-distilled (or filtered) h2o.

IF that fails, then get some of that "pet away" spray from the pet supply store, choosing something that is not chemical based.

One of my seniors does that- on the bed. I concur his collar to sort of distract him and he unremarkably stops. It's well-nigh like a self-soothing beliefs, or a minor compulsion.
